EdSteps seeks to build continuums of student work that demonstrate all levels of proficiency for each of the EdSteps skill areas.
Currently, the EdSteps continuums do not exist. EdSteps, led by the Council of Chief State School Officers, is in the process of building these continuums.
To complete the first continuum in writing, EdSteps needs to collect between 3,500-5,000 writing samples. As of August 23, 2010, EdSteps has collected over 3,500 pieces of writing and plans to end the collection process on September 25, 2010.
In the beginning of October, 2010, EdSteps will invite the public to begin rating the student work samples. This process will be open to anyone aged 18 or older. For more information about becoming a rater, please see Who Can Rate Work.
Once the ratings are completed, our committee of technical experts, led by Dr. Scott Elliot, will analyze the data and be able to rank the examples of student work from the most novice to the most expert. For more information on this methodology for turning the ratings into a continuum, please read our technical summary, or much longer full technical report.
Although this has never been done before on this large of a scale, EdSteps has succeeded in a pilot of the rating process and building a mini-continuum. Read the pilot study and see an example of the concept of the continuum below:
By clicking on an individual piece of work on the continuum, users will have access to an annotated, ranked piece of student work. Below is an example:

EdSteps looks forward to completing the work collection and rating process and being able to announce the launch of the world’s first continuum of student writing samples from Pre-K to college and professional writing. Thank you for your help in building this exciting project.
